Gutless Pacifist - 12/10/2003: "Christmas Rush"This is a very interesting article about the upcoming holiday season. He goes into pretty good detail about how the christian church hijacked the pagan holidays for their own purposes.
Which is all true. And I have more than once told some of my more zealous christian aquaintances to shut up and get your own holiday when they gave me the whole "Jesus is the reason for the season" line.
But one point I did want to make is that even though I
despise the whole schpeal that goes along with christmas, I do enjoy the vibe that christmas brings. I have always loved christmas. Not because of the shopping and the presents and the non-stop cartoon fest on TV, but because people really do seem to get a little bit nicer to each other. They really do seem to take a couple seconds out of their days to think about the other guy.
The christmas story that had the most impact on me as a kid was the one about the WWII soldiers in Germany. I don't know if it's true or not but it's a great story. How the Americans and Germans were in the middle of a frenzied battle on Christmas Eve. They were hunkered down in their foxholes for the night and someone started singing a christmas carol. And then they all started singing and they came out of their foxholes and they all got together int the middle of the battlefield and celebrated Christmas together. They related to each other as people, exchanging cigarettes and supplies, singing together.... That is powerful stuff!
Christmas was a great time around my house. My dad would be home and sober, we would go to grandmas house and have a big christmas lunch and my aunts and uncles and cousins would all be there. The women would be in the kitchen cooking and the men would be in the living room watching the game and the kids would be running around playing and generally trying to get underfoot as much as possible. There were of course dysfunctionalities, as there are in every family, but this time was about as close to Norman Rockwell as I have ever experienced.
Now that I have found my spiritual path and observe the Sabbats and Esbats rather than the christian holidays, I find that these holidays mean as much to me as the other ones did if not more. I find the spiritual meaning behind Ostara and the Solstice as well as the family connections these occasions bring and it fulfills me on many levels. In a way that christmas and easter never did.
So bring it on, I guess. Whatever get people to spend a little time being decent to each other is a good thing.

Well, I haven't given out the POWFP Get Over Your Damn Self award in a while but GW has roused me out of my vicoden-induced stupor long enough to get one out. So here it is:
CNN.com - Blunt Bush message for Taiwan - Dec. 9, 2003BLOODY HELL!!!!!!! Is there NOBODY'S business this man doesn't think he runs?!?!?!?!?!? GAD! SHUT THE HELL UP AND FIX YOUR OWN MESSES AND STAY OUT OF OTHER COUNTRIES DOMESTIC POLICIES!!!!!!!
He doesn't pay attention to anyone else's opinions on how OUR country should handle domestic policies! What a belly-crawling hypocrite!!! China is a HUGE economic market and their army could kick our ass without working up a sweat so he is sucking up to them. They kill political prisoners and sell their organs on the open market. They have a "one child per family" law that encourages abortion and even infanticide. They are COMMUNISTS!!!! Which means they are ATHEISTS!!!!!!! These are all things that GW finds abhorrent in the extreme!!! We are in the middle of massacring innocent Iraqis trying overthrow a regime to save the population from similar abhorrent practices!
Am I the only one made ill by this whole farce!?!?!?!?!?
Ok, back to my happy, fuzzy place.
